Managing endometriosis with plant-based medicine
We sat down with one of our plant-based medicine doctors, Dr. Anne, so chat about how plant-based medicine can help in alleviating symptoms of endometriosis and other types of pelvic pain.
Can you tell us about what endometriosis is?
Well the lining of the uterus is called the endometrium - it’s the endometrium that is shed when someone has a period. Endometriosis (commonly referred to as ‘endo’) is a condition where tissue that is the same as endometrium grows in places outside the uterus. When this happens it can bleed, become inflamed and cause irritation and pain. Endometriosis can occur anywhere in the pelvis, like on the ovaries and fallopian tubes or the outer surface of the uterus, even on the bladder, bowel or rectum.
What are the symptoms of endometriosis?
The main symptom people have with endometriosis is pain. Usually it’s pelvic pain, heavy painful periods, pain during sex or abdominal pain. There can be nausea too and sometimes severe fatigue. People often talk about stress, insomnia, anxiety or low mood related to living with endo.
Can you explain some ways plant-based medicine may support people living with endometriosis?
Some individuals living with endometriosis explore plant-based medicines as part of managing symptoms such as pain, nausea, stress, inflammation, or sleep difficulties. While early research suggests that cannabinoids like CBD may have potential benefits, especially in relation to inflammation and pelvic pain, this remains an evolving area of study.
People considering this approach have often explored conventional treatments first. It’s important to note that plant-based therapies don’t work for everyone, and individual responses can vary. If you're interested in learning more, our clinic offers consultations to discuss whether this type of treatment may be appropriate for your situation.
What is the first step for someone who wants to explore their pain management options?
Anyone is welcome to book with one of our plant-based medicine doctors at the clinic to discuss pain management options. You don’t need a referral. When you see us, we’ll talk about your specific symptoms and what kind of treatment you want to use. We really believe in holistic treatment, so we might talk about movement, nutrition and stress management as well as medication. It’s important that you feel like we understand your priorities for pain-management. Plant-based medicine works best when it is tailored to you.
