From Film and Literature to Medicine, Meet Dr Jake!
We love a good origin story - especially when it involves a theatre degree, world travel, and a dash of family tradition. At INMC, our doctors aren’t just medical brains; they’re real people with rich backstories that shape how they connect with patients. Meet Dr Jake - part doctor, part creative, and all around legend.
Hey Doctor Jake, tell us - how did you get into medicine?
I came into medicine a bit later in life - I first did a degree which was pretty arty, a degree in theatre, film and literature in New Zealand. After I finished that, I went overseas and travelled a bit, teaching English as a foreign language. I had always been interested in medicine - my mum and dad were both Doctors - mum was a GP who moved into Palliative care, and Dad was a Paediatrician so it was kind of a family tradition!
What is your favourite thing about working at INMC?
The people. Both my colleagues and my patients. I really enjoy hearing about people’s lives and connecting with them in a way that goes beyond just the medical side of things. It can obviously be a bit nerve wracking to talk to a GP about something that concerns you, so it’s nice to help people feel at ease. My main interest areas are men’s health, sexual health and travel medicine.
What do you imagine yourself doing if you weren’t a doctor?
I would probably be a writer or a multidisciplinary artist - I really enjoy plays and films. I used to paint quite a bit, and sculpture is something I’ve always wanted to explore.
