The GP is responsible for determining the appropriate Medicare item and the clinical service provided. Where the consultation changes from the originally booked appointment—for example, a short appointment becomes a longer or more complex consultation—the applicable fee should be determined by the GP in accordance with the practice's fee schedule and the doctor's billing arrangements.
-
Payment is generally required at the time of consultation unless an alternative arrangement has been approved by the practice. Instant Medicare rebate is available for patients if they bring in their physical debit card or have the eftpos option on their smart phone device. Where applicable, the practice may submit the Medicare claim electronically on behalf of the patient, this takes 24/48 hours to process with Medicare for the patient to receive their Medicare Rebate. Patients should have their current Medicare details available to facilitate claiming. The patient is responsible for ensuring that their Medicare details are current and that they meet Medicare's eligibility requirements.
GP vs Allied Health Services
-
GPs provide medical assessment and treatment across a broad range of health concerns, including:
New or unexplained symptoms
Acute illness and infections
Chronic disease management
Medication management
Preventive health and health assessments
Mental health assessment and management
Medical certificates and documentation where clinically appropriate
Referrals to specialists and other health professionals
Assessment of whether investigations such as pathology or imaging are required
Medical Termination of pregnancy
Maternal Health
Paediatric Consultations
Womens Health
A GP can also help determine which type of health professional is most appropriate for your needs.
-
Allied health professionals provide specialised services within their professional scope. Depending on the practitioners available at our practice, this may include services such as:
Psychology
Physiotherapy
Dietetics
Podiatry
Other allied health services
Allied health services are different from GP consultations and may have different fees, Medicare eligibility requirements and referral requirements. If you are unsure which practitioner is best for you, please generally explain to reception and request assistance.
Referrals
-
A referral may be required when you are seeing a specialist and want to claim a Medicare benefit for an eligible specialist service. A referral can also be relevant to particular allied health services or other Medicare-supported programs, depending on the service and your circumstances. A referral is not simply a general permission to see any healthcare professional. It has specific requirements under Medicare and may have a defined period of validity.
-
A referral may be made to a specific specialist, naming the specialist or specialist practice; or a specialist service where the referral arrangements permit this. If you already know which specialist you wish to see, please tell the GP at the time the referral is requested. If you do not know which specialist you need, the GP can discuss appropriate options with you and recommend or refer you as clinically appropriate. Patients should check with the specialist's rooms whether they accept the referral and whether any additional information is required.
